Sharon Bamidele of Lagos State emerged the Most Valuable Player after amassing 5 points in 5 games at the 5th Winifred Awosika Foundation Scrabble Tournament for Schools Finals held at Christland Opebi, Lagos yesterday 2nd of June. The event was the first to involve youth players (under 12) from all over the nation competing for laurels in Scrabble. 34 kids from several primary schools nation-wide participated in the finals after scaling state and zonal qualifying tournaments.
Sharon Bamidele won 5 games with a cumulative spread of +143 to place first. In second place was Archibong, Prestige from Akwa-Ibom state with 4 wins +395, while Joana, Eke with 4 wins +373 spread came third. Several spot prizes were also awarded including award for High Word, Most Innovative Player e.t.c .
Several dignitaries graced the occasion including the founder of the Foundation, Chief Winifred Awosika, the first President of the NSF, Gen, Gold Eburu who was Chairman of the occasion, DG Lagos State Ministry of Sport, NSF President Gora Suleiman and several past Nigerian sportsmen like Peter Rufai (former Super Eagles player), Falilat Ogunkoya (former 400m Nigerian athlete) and Olumide Oyedeji (former Nigeria basketball men’s team D’Tigers, player).
