The Mattel World Scrabble Championships 2018 has begun at The Riviera International Conference Centre Torquay, England. The World Scrabble Championships and the World Junior Scrabble Championships will be held simultaneously from Tuesday 23rd to Sunday 28th October 2018.
The World Scrabble Championships is divided into two divisions.
- Division 1 (Open Division) for players with WESPA rating from 1600 and over. Other players can join this division at their choice.
- Division 2 (Challenger Division) for WESPA rated under 1600.
The Championship consists of a 35 round event from Tuesday to Friday to be followed by Quarter-Finals (last 8) and Semi-Finals (last 4) on Saturday. The Finals (best of 5) will begin on Sunday 28th to determine the 2018 Champion.
Former WESPAC World Champion Jighere Wellington (ranked 2nd in the championship) along with compatriots Olawale Ilori(ranked 31st) and Jack Mpakaboari (ranked 46th) are Nigeria’s self-sponsored representatives in the Open (1) Division. They face stiff opposition from former World Champions Nigel Richards, Craig Beevers, Joel Wapnick and other top Scrabble players in the strong 75 players field.
